About the Project

Mawotsheni Community Project is a very special place built from pure love by a great team of people. Mawotsheni started in 2009 when Wil Groot from Willen en Doen in Netherlands, a much loved, charismatic whirl wind of a man, meets Nomapuzi , a gentle and incredibly hard working Xhosa mama with an equally huge heart and work ethic to match.

General Information

In an area forgotten by their government, bottom of the municipality ‘care pile’, the Transkei is still suffering from all consequences of apartheid, poor health, education, employment rates and infrastructure, to name the most obvious. Mawotsheni is no exception. There is (or was(“,) nothing really, apart from homesteads, and a gravel road that doesn’t lead to anywhere.

Nomapuzi for two years had worked from a small windowless falling down rondavel to run her pre-school. Walking 3 km’s each morning to give her children the best start in life she could possibly offer. Wil from Willen en Doen, a man with an incredibly valuable plan. At the moment Naomi and Jay are running the project, with all their heart.
